Since graduating from San Jose Sate University, Stevan Shapona has worked his way through various art styles: impressionism, expressionism and abstraction. Today he is fond of saying he has returned to his roots.
"I am a traditional oil painter with a concern for formal values," he says. "My painting reflects old-world values." While Shapona has painted still lifes and landscapes, it is his interpretation of classical nudes that is garnering attention.
Female figures are silhouetted against a dark simple wall and painted with limited detail. They seem to evoke another era, and his painterly style is reminiscent of John Singer Sargent.
"I've painted other things, but in the end I have decided that the figure is the most beautiful subject to paint," Shapona says.
