Sandy Ostrau:
Figures in the Landscape

I AM ATTRACTED to the colors, shapes and light found in the rolling hills and along the coastline of California. I try to capture the essence of what I see in vibrant and confident brush strokes. Each painting is worked over repeatedly to remove unnecessary detail and focus on expressing the fundamental elements of what I see. I use strong color and bold brushstrokes to tell my story.

More recently I have begun incorporating figures into my abstracted landscapes and interiors.

I am influenced by the Society of Six painters from the early 20th century, who created a modern California landscape style full of expressive brushwork and vivid color; and the Bay Area Figurative painters, who showed us a new way to consider the figure.
