Joan Longas: Distance & Memory
My work is narrative and autobiographical, as the work of an artist usually is. I paint about what I would like to talk about in private, about what I feel is worth stopping and contemplating in order to share it later.
Some of my most intimate and beautiful memories are of driving on a highway in California, wishing the road would never end. Roads and cars are one of the recurring themes in my work, a symbol of freedom and life. I was always moved by the knowledge that I was driving along the paths my Spanish ancestors traveled on foot, linking the old missions that are now the main California cities.
I studied at the Escola Massana Art and Design Center in Barcelona and worked as a graphic designer for years, until I finally decided not to postpone my rendezvous with painting any longer. I had my first exhibition in 1999. Since 2002, I have been a fulltime painter, living and painting in Barcelona, and exhibiting in galleries and museums throughout Spain and in London, Paris, Hong Kong and California.
